A Reflection of Who I Am

Background

On Sunday, January 15, 2012 my 65 year old brother Doug lost his battle against the debilitating affects of juvenile diabetes.  Below is my tribute that I presented at his memorial service held on Saturday, January 21st.

“Reflections”

“Welcome. I first give honor to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who is first in my life. He has given me the strength and courage to stand before you this morning to reflect on the life of my brother William Douglas Wilson.

As I was preparing this Reflection, I realized that what we do and go through is to prepare us for unforeseen events that will come into our lives. I feel as if I am here about to do the welcome as I do at my home church Green Grove Baptist under the leadership of my pastor Reverend George E. Holland, Sr. in West Berlin, New Jersey. The purpose of this reflection is due to the fact that some of you never met my brother and are here to support me or a family member; or you may not have seen Doug in many, many years because that is the dynamics of life.

Doug was the oldest of the first set of my father’s children by my mother Dorothy. We were raised in Germantown during the 50s and 60s. In addition to Doug there is my brother, Avon who we call Eddie a retired Philadelphia Police Officer, my brother Eric, a Licensed Minister and Author and my sister Lisa Ann Davis who passed away in July of last year. It was a full house of five rowdy children who were raised not only in a house with both parents; but we were also raised by the surrounding neighbors because both parents worked. Later when my father remarried, he added a daughter January Nicole, an Author and a brother Paul Owen, a Business Manager.

But we are here today to celebrate the life of my brother, “Big Doug” Wilson. “Big Doug” is what he was called when we were in high school because of his size. He was almost 6 foot and weighed 211 pounds.

In high school all of my brother’s friends called me “little Doug”. I don’t think they ever really knew my real name. I was almost 5’4” and less than 100 pounds soaking wet.

On the night of my high school graduation, my brothers Eddie and Doug went out celebrating, while I sat home alone on our front porch. After a while one of the most popular boys in our high school stopped by looking for my brother. He said, “Little Doug what are you doing still home on your graduation night?” He could not understand why I was not out celebrating with everyone else. So he invited me to join him and I was thrilled. This was one of the most popular boys in Germantown and here I was riding around with him. I have to say he was a perfect gentleman. I enjoyed myself thoroughly and he dropped me off at the end of the evening well before midnight. Well when Doug found out that Pookie took me out, he had a fit. Of course I didn’t know what the big deal was. I also didn’t know about Pookie’s reputation either, but Doug did and he tore into him; just like big brothers are suppose to do.

Years later, I ran into another of Doug’s friends, I was 30 at the time, sitting in a restaurant eating with my mother when out of the blue came, “Hey Little Doug how are you doing?” Even to this day I believe if I live long enough, I will hear that tag line again.

As time passed, we lived separate lives and didn’t see each other as much; just because our different lifestyles got in the way. But as I worked with Jackie to put this service together, I learned a lot about my brother that I either forgot or didn’t know.

In High School he was known as “Big Doug” for his size, but as he matured into manhood, he was known as “Big Doug” for his heart. Doug was generous to his family and friends and was there when they needed him. After years of auto body painting, Doug was injured on the job and retired on full disability. He eventually trained at Americorp and became a volunteer. His preference was to tutor and mentor children with mental and physical challenges.

In 1985 Doug and Jacqueline Mendez met and fell in love. The challenge for their relationship was that it was a package deal. Jackie had a severely handicapped eight year old little boy by the name of Jose. When Doug expressed his interest in Jackie, she told him if you want me, you have to accept my son. Jackie said without hesitation he told her about our brother with cerebral palsy…and said no problem. As the pictures tell the story, their lives grew and molded together where the three of them were in separable until now. Doug accepted Jose as his own and loved him dearly. As Jose grew to love Doug, he began to look like Doug and act like Doug. Jose who has cerebral palsy is unable to speak clearly but is able to call Doug “Pop”. It will be hard for him to understand that Pop won’t be coming home from the hospital this time; but he will understand what it means that Pop is in heaven with God. Jackie is a woman, who in my brothers’ life, was second to none. She is less than 5’ tall but her stature over shadows us all. She was my brother’s advocate with each hospital stay and recently won a battle with Harrisburg to extend Doug’s benefits for home care when he was ready to come home. She was able to be his helpmate and wife and still be an excellent mother to Jose. She has spent 27 years of her life loving my brother and I want to publically thank her. “Thank You Jackie…I love you.” Together they have poured love into the lives of their son Jose and several special needs children in Philadelphia. As you saw in the pictures his life was surrounded by the loves of his life, Jackie, Jose and their dogs Goldie and Ginger. I ask you to continually pray for Jackie and Jose as they begin a life without “Big Doug”.

My relationship with my brother has always been a bit complicated. Our family has been gifted by God to be intelligent and strong minded. With these personality traits we have been able to overcome our life challenges. But these personality traits can also be a double-edged sword. Doug and I both have little or no tolerance for those who think they are more than what they really are. Where I believe I have a bit more give, he didn’t pull any punches or mince his words, if he felt you were wrong…you were wrong. There were no gray areas for him and at times that made it difficult to stay in his presence. But over the past couple of years, I was blessed to reconcile with Doug and his family. My love for my brother rekindled and he was “Big Doug” to me again even though he was wheelchair bound.

Doug died from the effects of juvenile diabetes which took control of his life at age 14. In 1999 he had a kidney transplant. In 2006 he suffered from a stroke but survived and was able to lead a productive life. In 2011, Doug was on the list again for a new kidney. He was called 7 times to the hospital but each time turned away. In September he entered the hospital for a long stretch until his death. A week before his death, they amputated one of Doug’s legs. He was doing well and was facing another series of operations to remove his colon, gall bladder and a hernia pressing against his back. Doug suffered over the last several months from a lot of pain. At the end, the infection took over his body and they were unable to stop it. We were by his side when he passed and I am happy to report to you that his passing was peaceful and quiet. He truly looked like he just went to sleep and decided not to wake.

Doug had a very strong opinion about his relationship with God. He knew and respected that God existed, but just like many, was not convinced or fully understood Jesus’ role in the relationship. His years of service and works demonstrated to the world how good a man he was; but he didn’t quite grasp how Christ died for our sins and the need to accept him as his Lord and Savior was more important than just good works. But then as fall changed to winter he accepted Christ and I know without a doubt that I will see my brother again when it’s my turn to enter Heaven’s Gates. I also know that I will hear, “How you doing Little Doug?” because my big brother united with his friends who had gone on before him let them know that I am on my way to heaven too.”

Yesterday I had the pleasure to experience my first book launch celebration as an Author. I preface “as an Author” because I have done book launches many times for individuals who I have helped get their book published. I know there may be some people who may be wondering what made me write a book and why would anyone want to read it? After all I’m not famous and haven’t done anything spectacular in my life. My answer to is, God gifted me with the ability to record my feelings and things that I’ve observed as I went through different seasons in my life. Knowledge, Faith and Helps are among my spiritual gifts. I am living and operating in my gifts so it was easy for me to make the decision to write about and publish my experience.

One of the statements that my pastor, George Holland, tells us is “What you are going through is not for you.” I know that is a hard statement to understand. Why would God put me through so much pain and heartache if it’s not for me? It is for you to experience the situation and grow stronger in your Christian journey. It is for you to share your experience with those who have yet to experience the situation or to share with those who have already experienced it.

“Joy Comes Through The Mourning” is my recorded story of death, mourning and resurrection in a new life. I recorded my experience as I went through the death of my late husband, Donald Karper; my attempts to cope and get through the grief cycle and how the different tools and individuals that the Lord sent into my life helped bring me through the darkness. Out of this experience my current husband also widowed, Willie Smart and I have become facilitators of a new ministry called “Crossroads”. During Fulfillment Hour we meet with the widowed community to scriptually focus on our collective experience. Our prayer is once we have established a strong structure we will move on to others who have suffered a loss of a loved one through other circumstances other than death. The deep void that a loss in a relationship sometimes causes God’s people to walk away from fellowship. Crossroads gives them a place to come where they can rebuild their faith and begin a stronger relationship with God.

I truly enjoyed myself yesterday and I want to thank the folk that came out to share that experience. I pray that I have more opportunities to share my story and to testify how God has given me a series of experiences that has brought me closer to HIM.

I encourage you to buy the book and read my story. Death comes to us all. As a survivor, death is something that we must be able to accept and work through. You can order “Joy” directly from my website-http://www.gladstonepublishing.com/JCTTM/Joy-1.htm.

Feeling Great!

If you are seeing less of me each time we meet it’s because I am living my life with a purpose. I want to live a healthy and more active lifestyle.  I want to be able to outrun diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol and heart disease. These are all by-products of obesity. Look around at your family and friends. How many already have one or more of these unnecessary conditions?

My oldest brother Doug became a diabetic at the age of 14. He is 64 this year. He is a kidney transplant recipient; and this year is on the list to receive another kidney.  He has suffered so much because of this one disease. I lost a very good friend in January due to liver failure. She too struggled most of her life with her size; and the medication that she took to help her get through finally caused her organs to fail.  My late husband Donald enjoyed an active life until onset of diabetes eventually wore his organs down and weakened him to succumb to liposarcoma a fatty-tissue cancer.

How much would you be willing to invest in your life to save your body from organ failure? Let me help you make a decision that will change your life. Visit my website: http://www.bit.ly/thefitsystem. I’d love to work with you to redirect your lifes to a healthier and happier lifestyle.

The FIT Approach

FIT Body Composition System

Change Your Body - Change Your Life

I’m on my way to getting fit with the most comprehensive body composition program in the world.  Today is day one of my new nutritional routine which will also involve light exercise.  I want to get back into pilates for now and gradually work my way up to cardio dancing.

I am 60 years old and consistently reminded by my doctor that I’m pre-diabetic and borderline high blood pressure.  My goal is to lose 2 pounds a week until I reach my desired weight which is 140.  I have not seen 140 for about 20 years. So this blog will be my daily accountability and I plan to only weigh myself every Tuesday morning.

The FIT Approach

Source: TNI (fit.tni.com/2452425)

Fit products are engineered to build lean muscle and burn fat. (Of course these statements have not been evalutated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.)  But the Fit program also emphasizes proper nutrition and exercise to help you achieve a lasting healthy lifestyle.

FIT Products

The proven bioactives in FIT products enhance and accelerate the benefits of smart nutrition and exercise–helping you achieve optimal body composition faster with longer-lasting results.

  1. Reset – 6 day cleansing formula. It detoxifies and gently cleanses; helps break through frustrating diet plateaus and jumpstarts my metabolism. I will drink one bottle for the next six days.
  2. Restore – Powerful Probiotic. It promotes better digestive health; enhances immunity; and helps relieve temporary constipation and gas caused by bad bacteria.
  3. Replenish – Balanced Multivitamin. Supplements the diet with safe nutrient levels; increases energy and vitality; and made with highly biavailable ingredients for rapid Absorption.
  4. Rebuild – Power Protein Shake. Builds lean muscle and helps burn more fat; prevents muscle fatigue; controls hunger; and sustains energy.
  5. Resist – Super Snack Bar. Provides protein and fiber; suppresses hunger pangs; builds lean muscle and burns fat; and maintains healthy blood sugar levels already within normal ranges.
  6. Reduce – Fat-Flushing Formula. Flushes fat from your body; may reduce risk of heart disease; improves nutrient absorption and controls hunger.

FIT Nutrition

The more nutritious the food you eat, the healthier you’ll be.  Our web-based menus and recipes help take the guesswork out of healthy eating.  (Diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include seven grams of soluble fiber per day from psyllium husk may reduce the risk of heart disease.  One serving of FIT Reduce contains 2 grams of soluble fiber from psyllium husk.)

I printed off the web-based menu as a guideline. I won’t have every food item listed, but it will help me with my choices of food to eat. The most important thing to keep in mind is calorie intake and which foods to stay away from.  This has to be a lifestyle change not a diet that will be a temporary regiment. I want to build a routine that I can stay on for as long as my age will allow.

FIT Exercise

One of the most important things you can do to build lean muscle and burn fat is exercise.  That’s why our FIT website offers a wide range of workout plans and exercise ideas

I’ve never been into heavy aerobics, but I love pilates, ballet and taebo.  I have small hand weights for the strength training. The program has to be one that I will stick with. I have a gym membership and I haven’t be using it. I will probably start back once I build up my enthusiasm for exercising again. If I don’t I won’t beat myself up, but I will exercise.

FIT Groups

When starting the FIT program, we strongly recommend that you form a FIT group.  Members of a group can motivate, encourage, inspire, and support each other.

I have one other person on FIT right now and we are going to support and encourage each other. I hope that as you following my journey.

How the Fit Program Works

1. Calculate your daily calorie goal at fit.tni.com/2452425.

2. Start the Fit program by taking the products every day as directed on the label.

3. Eat healthy staying with your daily calorie goal.

4. Exercise six days a week with a strength and aerobic training.

5. Every seventh day is a free day. Eat as desired within moderation.

This is going to be my challenge because I hate to exercise, and I’m not in control of the meals. My mother-in-law is a great cook from Georgia. She’s 120 pounds soaking wet and doesn’t need to watch her weight.  She will be on me about eating enough because she will be concerned that I’m starving myself to death by her standards.

Well I’m going to give it my best.

Books Books and More

I’m sitting in LaUnique Bookstore and  African-American  Cultural and Arts Center. I love spending time browsing through the many different cultural books that I was not aware of. Especially by vintage books by J. A. Rogers, Carter G. Woodson, Lerone Bennett, Jr. and many others.  As a Christian, I’ve alway had conflicts of reading “ancestral” history books, because in the old testament my ancestors were the ones being destroyed by God.  Historically my peeps worships lesser gods and idols, and now as a follow of Jesus Christ I only worship the one true and living God.

Nevertheless, as a more mature Christian and avid reader and history lover, I have enough God-centered confidence that allows me to acknowledge my ancestors and their history.  I’m a strong believer that without understanding our history, we can never really truly know who we are.

I’ve also purchase books written by Muslim, as well as, Christian authors.

Well back to the books.  Here is a list that I’ve purchased since July.  I’m thinking about doing book reviews to entice you to buy the books. The website to the bookstore is http://www.launiquebooks.net.  The telephone number to the store is (856)338-1958. Mr. Larry Miles is the proprietor andcultural historian.

Retiring Minds Want To Know

Retiring Minds Want To Know

Have you begun thinking about retirement? Are you in your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s or 60s?  I met a young woman who has pledged to teach students to prepare their minds to retire at 30.  More on her in a future article.

I have to be honest, when I was a child I never believed I would live to be 21. When I was in my 30s I wanted to retire at 55. I was working in a corporate environment getting a good paycheck every other week.  My bills were paid. I lived in a beautiful house and had my own car.  I could buy what I wanted, eat where I wanted and vacation three weeks out of the year.  I had a 401(k) and a savings account.

It was easy for me to plan for my future retirement.  But then life jumped in and my life was turned upside down by the decisions that I began to make.  I had too much time and not enough God in my life.  I I was not wise in the use of my time; nor with the people I chose to spend my time.  I had never read or heard Psalm 90:12 “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” I didn’t know God’s desire for me to be wise in the use of my time, nor in my day to day activities.

In Ephesians 5:15 – 18 the Lord tells us “Be very careful, then, how you live–not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.  Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.  Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery.  Instead, be filled with the Spirit.”

Be filled with the Holy Spirit. I thank God that I am, and because I am, my life has become so rich and rewarding. Not rich in coins, but rich in wisdom and time.  I no longer think about retiring. I have accepted the word that God has given us 120 years. So for me I have a very long time before I retire.  I have a lot of time to manage all of the responsibilities and tasks that the Lord places in my path each and every day.

Psalm 39:4 “Show me, O Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life.”

In reality, the Lord can take me home as I type this message. Yet I live my life as if I’m just starting it anew. This message should have been saved for June 24th, but I write it today because this is when the Lord has given it to me.

Why pine away your hours looking to retire?  Why not use your time to build up relationships and develop projects that will glorify God?Colossians 3:17 “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Retiring minds should want to know…”Lord what is it you desire of me?”

Retiring #9736

[Previously Published May 6, 2010 to honor my brother Police Officer Avon Edward Wilson.]

With a lot of sand still in my eyes, I sit to write about my evening with my brother retired police officer Avon Edward Wilson.  After 39 years, distinctive years I may add, my brother Eddie, to the delight of my mother, siblings, aunt, uncle and cousins, has come to the end of his police career. During these years I rarely saw my brother with the exception of a family function; Christmas, Thanksgiving, Funerals and an occasional family picnic.  On August 3, 2008 I had the honor of having my brother escort me down the isle of my wedding and give me away.

We are two of seven children; five in the first marriage (William Douglas, Avon Edward, me, Eric Owen, and Lisa Ann) and two from my father’s second (January Nicole and Paul Owen).  Dougie and Eddie were always called by their middle name.  I am really happy that did not carry over to me otherwise I would be Marie.  I don’t feel like a Marie. They actually called me ‘Skinny Minnie’ because I was a stick until I reached my thirties.

I always loved my brother Eddie a little more than the others. I think we all have one favorite sibling. He was popular, athletic and kind. I remember in July 1967 when Eddie enlisted in the Air Force, I had just begun work at Bell Telephone as an information operator; now known as directory assistant or just 411.  I couldn’t concentrate on my training session because my heart was broken. “My brother is going to war,” I cried when my trainer noticed I was upset. My supervisor not only allowed me to leave early that day, they sent me to the airport in a cab to see my brother off.  I remember the happy farewell we gave him as we sent him on his way. You have to understand those times. Vietnam was heating up and a lot of the operator’s sons, brothers, boyfriends, and husbands were also going to war.

The Lord blessed Eddie and our family. Eddie didn’t go to Vietnam, but served his four years in San Antonio, Texas; Libya, North Africa; Topeka, Kansas and finally Fort Worth, Texas.  While in the service he finished first in his class in canine training and received honors as a Canine Handler in 1969 and again received honors in Wiesbaden, Germany in 1970.  In 1971 Eddie returned home and joined the Philadelphia Police Department.

While reading his dedication from last night’s program, I also learned that over the years he served as Uniform Patrol and Burglary Detail and made a total of 1,500 arrests.  In 1987 he was assigned to Reports Control Unit; in 1988 the Police Detention Unit; and finally in 1990 the Mobile Crime Detection Unit now known as the Crime Scene Unit.

In 1984, I remember the call that Eddie had been shot by a sniper while on surveillance. There was another incident while chasing a suspect, he stepped down on his foot and ripped his achilles heel. How blessed he has been to work as hard as he has and come through with only two injuries.

I write this now, because usually you read these accolades in an obituary.  I pray that Eddie has many, many healthy years of retirement. Of course, I know that he won’t just sit on the front porch of the home that we were raised, but together we will be writing his books and developing programs.

One of the most incredible gifts that my brother received last night was to find out that his picture is on the cover of “The Encyclopedia of Crime Unit Investigation.” Incredible!

We need role models for our children. How about your family? Don’t wait until sitting at a funeral to get to know your family.  Don’t wait until they put together a family reunion to find out about your ancestory. Now that my brother has retired I look to spending many hours of us getting to know each other better.  It’s never to late.

After all I am only half way through my journey.

Me and My Family
Avon Stood In For My Father

We were always close as children but as adults we grow apart because of his job. It took up his life.

In the far left picture is my family in the 60′s minus my dad who was out golfing. My mom placed one of his trophies on the fireplace behind us so that he was represented in the picture. I am seated in the center to my mom’s right, then my sister Lisa, Avon (Eddie is what I called him.), Doug, and Eric.

In the next picture, I was honored to have my brother walk me down the aisle when I married Willie in August 3, 2008.

Relationships are so important. Especially as we get older. I made it a point to forgive those who hurt me; keep in my life those who really mattered to me and let go those who didn’t value me.

All Things Work Together

[Previously published: June 24, 2010 my 60th Birthday.]

Titus 2:1 “You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine. 2:3 “Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live…” 2:4 “Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, andto be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.”  My homebased businesses puts me in front of women of all walks.  I have opportunities to be a witness and role model.

It all works together.

I ran into “Just Bill” Peters the other night and he asked me where my suitcase of business cards were. I laughed and told him I only had one card because my products and services were related. My products and services are focused on living a healthy and happy lifestyle.  Not the lifestyle of the rich and famous, but a balanced lifestyle.

I prayed to be the ‘virtuous woman’ when I was younger.  I later realized what a foolish prayer that was.  Have you really paid attention to what it takes to be a virtuous woman?

The Wife of Noble Character

I do pray to be a blessing to my family and friends. I do pray that my business decisions are a blessing to my customers and clients.   I do pray for wisdom and understanding as I recommend my products and services; and as I sit side-by-side counseling based on my business experience and insight given to me by the Holy Spirit who never leaves me.

Oh…I also sew, crochet and Knit. :)

Hello world!

This is a personal article. It’s been a long year and I’ve changed directions a number of times.  This has been a very productive year for me. I have found my passion again and I’m on target to complete ten books by the end of 2010.

The last two holdouts are my own;

1) Cultivating Pearl

2) Aunt Dee and the Safari Rail Line

Both are based on my experience, one takes place during the 50′s and 60′s and the other in 2009 when I joined the Philadelphia Freedom School movement at Lea Community School during the summer of 2009.  It was an awesome experience for me. I had never taught curriculum full-time. My experience was training adults to use software applications that were designed by me or an third party company and train them in how to use it.

Philadelphia Freedom School

Working with youth is challenging and fun.  Our curriculum followed a set agenda each day. This may seem like a cake walk but it was not easy. Each day you had to take down the posters made for that days program; design and replace the poster with the next day’s poster.  These posters consisted of:

1. Your Daily Agenda
2. Supporting Material for the Book of the Day.
3. Creating Vocabulary Words or Math Flash Cards.
4. Keeping the Reading Library fresh with new books during the 8 week program.

I had a class of 14 youths ranging from age 8-11.  Two of my girls had just moved to United States from Egypt and didn’t have strong reading skills. In Egypt they memorized and recited their lessons. It was really challenging to get them to write their thoughts down. Raja would stand in the front of the class with her book in hand and give a wonderful and thoughtful presentation; just for me to find out that she composed her presentation in her head. I really was amazed and wished this was as skill that all of our youths had an opportunity to learn.

From this experience comes “Aunt Dee and the Safari Rail Line”.
